The 'Family' That Controls The Secretive Dera Sacha Sauda

With a special CBI court convicting Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan of rape on 25 August, a crisis is looming over the sect, Dera Sacha Sauda, which he heads. While the exact quantum of the sentence against him will be announced today, speculation is already on about the next chief of the Dera.

As first impressions go, a bitter battle for succession may be in store at the headquarters in Sirsa, Haryana. According to reports, Singh's three biological children do not seem to be in the running to succeed him.

His two daughters, Charanpreet Insan and Amarpreet Insan, are both married, their husbands having taken their surname. Singh's only son, 35-year-old Jasmeet Insan, is married to the the daughter of former MLA and Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi. Jasmeet, who owns a business, is not active in the Dera. In any case, the policy of succession at the Dera is not dictated by family allegiances.

At stake is a fortune worth billions, no less. The Dera headquarters in Sirsa are spread over 700 acres, with a state-of-the-art hospital, shopping complex, educational institutions and a giant auditorium, as large as an Olympic stadium. There is a self-sustaining dairy and vegetable farm on its premises. The Dera also has properties across India and abroad and millions of followers, who donate to it .

The organisation has allegedly removed information of its holdings from its website, since the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered it to pay for the damages caused to public property by its followers, who went on a riot and rampage after their leader was convicted of rape.

The main contender for Singh's role is Honey Preet Insan, his adopted daughter, who has shadowed him for years. According to a man in Panchkula, who claimed to be her husband, Honey Preet, now 30, was forcibly taken away by Ram Rahim Singh. Soon elevated in the organisation as one of his trusted aides, she has also starred as the leading lady opposite her spiritual mentor in several films made by him.

On her website, Honey Preet describes herself philanthropist, editor, actress and director. She calls herself "PAPA's ANGEL" and "daughter of the king of kings" on social media. But her competition is no less tough. It comes from none other than the nambardaar or second-in-command of the sect, Brahmachari Vipasana.

Having joined the Dera and graduated from the girl's college run by it in Sirsa, Vipasana has risen through the ranks to head the management of the sect. It is likely that she may be chosen over Honey Preet, given her steady service to the community for many years. Until the chief makes his choice of successor known, it is expected that the spokesperson of the Dera Aditya Insan may look after its daily operations.

How Hundreds Of Sadhus Were Allegedly Brainwashed And Castrated At The Dera Sacha Sauda

The Dera Sacha Sauda, currently headed by Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan, who was convicted of rape on 25 August, is a den of horrors that keeps giving.

Apart from reports of women being raped by Singh and the act being described by the euphemism "pitaji ki maafi" in his secretive gufa or cave, at least two instances of murder and the forced castration of hundreds of devotees have come to light, all allegedly perpetrated under Singh's instructions.

Shortly before the release of Singh's controversial movie MSG: Messenger of God, a former member of the Dera accused the spiritual guru of forcing around 400 men in his ashrams to undergo surgical castration.

In a chilling report in The Quint, Hansraj Chauhan describes the ordeal he went through as a 19-year-old in the year 2000, when he was drugged by a compounder with a glass of Pepsi a Dera Sacha Sauda hospital in Gurusar Modiya in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar. He woke up two days later to find his testicles wrapped in a bundle of bandages. Since then, he's not been able to indulge in sexual activities for the past 17 years.

His predicament, allegedly, was shared by hundreds of other premis (or beloveds, as the male sadhus at the Dera are called), who were spiked with drugs and forced to undergo such a procedure in a bid to keep them celibate and pure. Castration, the men were told, would allow them to get closer to god. The CBI is currently looking into these complaints of castration.

Ironically, while this sterilisation drive was enforced by the moral police at the ashrams, the chief of the sect presumably indulged his carnal desires, as the stories of several women being raped would attest. If the women were emotionally blackmailed into keeping their silence, the men were allegedly given some drugs every morning to keep them distracted and make them lose control over their will.

The women at the ashram were also kept away from one another and no one was allowed mobile phone or any access to newspapers. Under this strict regime of surveillance, the authorities of the Dera had a free-for-all. Money would be raised by auctioning the vegetables grown at the farm of the Dera ashrams — with a basket of cauliflowers being sold for several crores of rupees.

Supreme Court Questions Gujarat Govt. Over Slow Trial In Rape Case Against Asaram Bapu

NEW DELHI -- The Supreme Court on Monday questioned the Gujarat Government for slow trial over self-styled accused godman, Asaram Bapu, in connection with a rape case registered against him.

There are separate rape cases registered against the accused in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

On 1 August, the Apex Court heard the plea filed by Asaram in this case.

Earlier in April, the Supreme Court had asked the Gujarat trial court to consider Asaram Bapu's case urgently and finish the trial in a time-bound manner.

In another case registered against him, the apex court had earlier dismissed his bail plea in a Rajasthan harassment case, where a teenager had accused him of sexually assaulting her during celebrations in a village near Jodhpur Ashram.

The Jodhpur Police arrested Asaram on 3 August, 2013 and since then, he has been in prison.

The apex court had in October last year sought the Centre's response and five states on a plea seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged murder of children through black magic and attacks on ten witnesses in Asaram's rape cases.

Asaram Bapu's son Narayan Sai had also been named in connection with a rape case registered against him by the Gujarat state.

Sai was arrested for allegedly raping a Surat-based woman who was his father's disciple between 2002 and 2005.

The Gujarat Government had earlier told the top court division bench that the rape case registered against Asaram would very likely precede in an expeditious manner, adding that the trial would be completed within six months so the bail should not be granted to him in the case.

PV Sindhu at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

If you caught the women's singles final of the World Badminton Championships between Japan's Nozomi Okuhara and our very own PV Sindhu, chances are, you're still reeling from the adrenaline rush from the jitters-inducing close finish in Scotland last night.

Even as Indians are undoubtedly heartbroken over yet another world top spot slipping away from its talented sportswomen in the last crucial moments of a final -- a mere six Sundays ago, on July 23, the Indian women's cricket team lost the world cup to England by just nine runs -- no one can deny the spell-binding nature of the match between the two equally determined 22-year-old shuttlers. Iron will, breathtaking stamina and competitive spirit at its fiercest best were on display throughout the 110-minute slugfest, the second longest women's single badminton match and the longest match of the tournament.

In the end, even though Sindhu lost, the fact that she went down fighting tooth and nail was not lost on anyone. Saina Nehwal, who bagged the bronze and watched the final from the railing, later walked over to coach Gopichand and joked, "Mera petrol khatam ho gaya dekhte, dekhte (I ran out of fuel, just watching this game)! Wonderful match."

She wasn't the only one overwhelmed by watching the goings-on on the court. Emotions ran high as Indians rejoiced over the bittersweet victory of seeing two of its best players on the winners' podium, even as the top honour continued to elude them, and, predictably, many turned to Twitter as an outlet for their feelings and to congratulate Sindhu on her remarkable performance. From the Prime Minister to the public, and Bollywood stars, media persons, politicians, comics, and, of course, fellow sportspersons, no one was left unmoved.

NEW DELHI -- India and China have agreed to "disengage" in Doklam area in Sikkim sector where the armies of both countries have been in a standoff since the middle of June, sharply escalating tensions.

The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said that during bilateral communications, "we were able to express our views and convey our concerns and interests".

"On this basis, expeditious disengagement of border personnel at face-off site at Doklam has been agreed to, and is ongoing."

The decision to disengage their troops comes ahead of a crucial BRICS summit being hosted by China in September, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend.

Without Action To Back It Up, Modi's 'Mann Ki Baat' Is Just Words Without Bite

The prime minister wanted to talk about festivals in his Mann ki Baat radio address. He wanted to talk about Samvatsari Parva for the Jains, Ganesh Chaturthi for the Hindus, Eid-ul-Zuha for the Muslims. But before he did any of that he talked about violence.

"In my address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, I had said that violence in the name of faith will not be tolerated, whether it is communal belief systems, whether it is subscribing to political ideologies, whether it is allegiance to a person or customs and traditions. No one has the right to take the law into one's own hands in the name of one's beliefs," he said.

He did not mention Haryana. He did not mention Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the man with whom he has a photo-op. But the implication was clear.

And it elicited praise. The Prime Minister who often maintains a judicious silence for weeks on issues such as these had spoken up and spoken uncharacteristically promptly. Anita Joshua points out in The Telegraph, "Rarely has the Prime Minister spoken about a contentious issue while it is on the boil, preferring instead to comment after the storm has died down."

But how strange to think that we have come to such a pass that we must appreciate the fact that an adept communicator like Modi has chosen to comment in a timely fashion about an issue as shocking as the rampant violence in Haryana.

But how strange to think that we have come to such a pass that we must appreciate the fact that an adept communicator like Modi has chosen to comment in a timely fashion about an issue as shocking as the rampant violence in Haryana. Surely that's fairly minimal when it comes to expectations.

However by alluding to his Independence Day address when he said violence in the name of faith would not be tolerated, the Prime Minister also signaled the limits of the power of his speech.

Modi can say it will not be tolerated (and said it more than once now) but what does it mean on the ground? Have the cow vigilantes disbanded and gone home? Do the followers of Ram Rahim seem chagrined? Has the Haryana government issued a mea culpa?

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Verdict Aftermath: Blood Sport Erupts Across 3 States

On the contrary the Prime Minister makes lofty vows in the passive voice. But his party's spin doctors and ministers actively make excuses on the ground. In Haryana we are hearing them by the bushel.

On the contrary the Prime Minister makes lofty vows in the passive voice.

For example,

Congress politicians too had courted the favour of Singh, as if that lets the BJP off the hook in Haryana in any way. As the party in power in Haryana, the buck stops with the Manoharlal Khattar government. If the Congress had been in power, their wooing of Singh would have been under the scanner too. Unless Khattar government's excuse is that they are no better than the Congress.

Haryana minister Manish Grover said that when there was a crowd of 50,000 to 1 lakh, "tab unmen ek natural gussa aata hai (they have a natural anger)." The problem, of course, was with the big bad media who had "created an atmosphere in the country – Babaji aa rahen hain, Babaji aa rahen hain (Babaji is coming, Babaji is coming)."

Grover along with two other ministers Ram Bilas Sharma and Anil Vij had given Singh Rs 1.12 crore. Vij had lamented he could not give more than Rs 50 lakh out of his discretionary fund to him.

On Friday Sharma had defended Singh's followers as "simple, loving people" who had "till now not touched a single plant." There was no indication that Sharma was eating his words.

After the violence in Basirhat in Bengal, state BJP leaders demanded the Mamata Banerjee government be dismissed and President's rule be imposed. Basirhat was spontaneous. It had not been building up for days. But apparently different standards apply for Haryana.

Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Convicted: Supporters Go On A Rampage

The BJP there is trying valiantly to shield their man, handpicked by the PM himself, Manohar Lal Khattar, by claiming a low-level administration goof-up allowed so many people to assemble in the first place and that anti-social elements had penetrated the dera followers. The Panchkula DCP Ashok Kumar was suspended but the Home Minister (who happens to be the chief minister) was unscathed.

Some even congratulated the government for restoring order as quickly as it did. As IANS reports, it patted itself on its back "for controlling the situation within three hours" and claimed it could have been worse.

The high court said bluntly the government was "misleading the court" and "administrative decisions were paralysed because of the political decisions" but the government seemed unfazed, preferring to blame anti-social bad apples, lower-level bureaucrats, sensationalistic media, and other political parties, anything and anyone but its own ineptitude.

If words are not backed up by actions, there is little reason to believe they carry much weight.

That's why the Prime Minister's impassioned appeal in his Mann ki Baat might be timely, but sounds empty as well. If words are not backed up by actions, there is little reason to believe they carry much weight.

The Prime Minister said in his Mann ki Baat:

"I want to assure my countrymen that people who take the law into their own hands and are on the path of violent suppression – whether it is a person or a group –neither this country nor any government will tolerate it."

It's good to hear the Prime Minister reiterate yet again that everyone must abide by the law. It would be even better to see evidence of that zero tolerance in action.

Why We Need To Free Ourselves From Ignorance Of The Law

$

0

As we put on our best face forward for India's 70th Independence Day celebrations, I experienced a chest-thumping kind of pride for our values reflected in the Constitution and Fundamental Rights guaranteed to every citizen of Free India. Several brave judgements by the judiciary—ranging from the 12 June 1975 verdict of the Allahabad High Court convicting then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of electoral malpractices and debarring her from holding any elected post, to the Supreme Court in March 2015 striking down Section 66A of the IT Act which allowed unjustified arrests for "objectionable" content online—have been hailed as reflecting the kind of freedoms that only a mature society would allow an individual. A free and progressive judiciary determines whether a country's fabric is healthy and robust or if it's a combustible country like North Korea and certain nations in Africa and the Middle East which have little or no judicial system to speak of.

Did you know we are entitled to free drinking water even in coffee shops? Or that there is recourse to being refused a ride by an auto driver?

The judiciary in India can't be bought, contrary to what some may have felt in the cases of powerful stars such as Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt. After all, for every one of these there is a Subrata Roy who despite being one of the wealthiest industrialists in the country has spent time in jail (of course writing books from there), or a Chhagan Bhujbal who in spite of being the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra in cooling his heels in prison.

However, what dilutes the impact of these path-breaking judicial decisions is the complete ignorance displayed by a majority of people when it comes to law. And if and when they do become entangled in legal matters they are at a complete loss. How can we not build awareness of the law when it is one of the strongest pillars of society and a country? It's like living in a swanky high rise without knowing whether there is a safe and strong foundation. Our role has to go beyond uninterested and cynical to involved and pro-active to form well-informed opinions. Perhaps then it won't be as easy to be dismissive of the law and believe and act on what is rightfully granted to us. The law is not a lofty ideal encased in a gilded vault with the keys with only a fortunate few—rather, it is enmeshed in our daily lives. Did you know we are entitled to free drinking water even in coffee shops, which often force us to buy overpriced bottled water, claiming that the regular stuff is not available? Or that there is recourse to being refused a ride by an auto driver (I am sure that everyone, especially those in Delhi, are jumping to find out what that is!)?

Perhaps it's time to pull out our phones and start googling "Fundamental Rights in India", rather than going through the rest of our lives blindly. Also remember this, ignorance of law is not an excuse for having committed a crime and you'll have to serve time. So if in doubt it's better to check to see if you're running afoul or not!

Now that our nation has been free for seven decades, let us also free ourselves from ignorance of the law to rightfully claim our place in the sunrise of India.

‘Qaidi Band’: Yet Another Product Of Yash Raj Films' Long History Of Sexist And Feudal Practices

$

A little over a month ago, Yash Raj Films unveiled the two leads for their latest film, Qaidi Band. One of them was Aadar Jain, who was blatantly marketed as Raj Kapoor's grandson. The other was Anya Singh, who was promoted using pictures of her in bikinis. It reflected how little even the biggest studios in Bollywood know about the public for whom they claim to make films, since they did this when the nepotism debate was at its peak, and when sexist portrayal of women in films was coming under serious fire. Twitterati were quick to react and call them out for both things. What they didn't realise is that Yash Raj Films has a long history of sexist and feudal practices.

Faulty billing

If you notice the opening or closing credits of any film, you'd see that there is an order in which the names of the film's cast and crew appear. This is referred to as "billing." Around the world, and especially in Hollywood (which Bollywood borrows heavily from), billing of the cast, i.e. the actors in the film, is determined by various factors. Sometimes, like with Woody Allen films, the billing is purely alphabetical. In a few cases, billing depends on the centrality of the roles played by actors. But most often, it is based on the level of stardom and/or seniority.

In a way, billing is the most reflective of the ingrained sexism in the industry—because production houses can offer literally no argument about market forces to justify sexist billing.

In the 2010 film Band Baaja Baaraat, produced by YRF, debutant Ranveer Singh, a completely unknown entity, was billed over co-star Anushka Sharma, who had already appeared in two films, one of them a blockbuster. Gunday, yet another YRF production, features Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, and Priyanka Chopra. When the film released, Singh was only four films old, with only two of them being hits. Kapoor was only two films old, and one of these was a flop. And yet, both these actors were billed over Chopra, who had been in the industry for a decade at that point, and had starred in almost 40 films—more than six times as many as the two men put together.

Priyanka Chopra got second billing in another Yash Raj Film, Pyaar Impossible, this time to Uday Chopra, whose abject failure in the film industry need not even be argued. In Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Abhishek Bachchan and Bobby Deol, two star kids who could never get much traction at the box office in their entire careers, were billed before Preity Zinta, one of the biggest female stars of the mid 2000s. In Dhoom 2, international star Aishwarya Rai was billed after Abhishek Bachchan, and a very popular Bipasha Basu was billed after Uday Chopra.

The list does not end. Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Dil Bole Hadippa, Lafangey Parindey, Ishaqzaade, Shuddh Desi Romance, Dhoom 3, Daawat-e-Ishq, Bewakoofiyaan are all films in which male stars were billed over women senior to them, either in terms of stardom or filmographies, or both. They all happen to be produced by Yash Raj Films.

There can be two arguments against the point made here. One, why mention films like Bachna Ae Haseeno, where the male actor is credited first because he's the lead? Two, why blow a small issue like billing out of proportion?

Premier studios like Yash Raj Films repeatedly disrespect female stars by billing them after men who are significantly junior to them.

The flaw in the first argument comes to light simply by looking at the very list of films mentioned. In Shuddh Desi Romance and Bewakoofiyaan, Rishi Kapoor, a male star of yesteryears, is billed first despite playing a supporting role. Even in films that are not YRF productions, one sees male veterans like Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor being billed first even when they're in supporting roles. Clearly, Bollywood and YRF do not care about billing the "lead" first in these cases. Then why the double standard in Bachna Ae Haseeno? Why not bill Bipasha Basu, a veteran of around 30 films at that point, over Ranbir Kapoor, an actor who had appeared in just one film till then, and that too a flop?

The second argument is flawed for a different reason. The conversation about the massive wage gap between male and female actors has reached Bollywood. The sexist portrayals of women, lack of films with female leads, songs that glorify harassment, have all at least become a conversation in India, which is the beginning of bringing about change. But when it comes to most of these things, production houses are always armed with arguments about market forces. They claim that actors' remunerations depend on the size of the crowds they can pull in. They say that they cannot make too many films with female leads because the market for that isn't big enough, and they have to think about what sells. These arguments are not entirely without merit.

This is why we need to start a conversation about billing. In a way, billing is the most reflective of the ingrained sexism in the industry—because production houses can offer literally no argument about market forces to justify sexist billing. It hurts no one's pockets if a female star is billed first, especially if she's much senior to the men in the film. And yet, premier studios like Yash Raj Films repeatedly disrespect female stars by billing them after men who are significantly junior to them.

The 'N' word again

Now, we come to YRF's second long-standing sin: nepotism. After Kangana Ranaut accused Karan Johar of nepotism on his talk show, Johar made a public statement in which he mocked Ranaut for not understanding what the word means. He claimed that he has never engaged in nepotism because he hasn't worked with his relatives.

For years, YRF has either launched members of Bollywood's elite families, or repeatedly cast them in films despite their poor box office records.

This is a defence several Bollywood blue bloods have used over the years, and even more so in recent months. Sonam Kapoor once claimed that none of the people she has worked with are her father's friends. Mahesh Bhatt claimed that his daughter, Alia, was launched by Karan Johar, who isn't really a friend of his. Even Aadar Jain, who's being launched despite zero acting credentials, claims that he is not a product of nepotism, because Aditya Chopra, the head of YRF, isn't related to him.

On the surface, this sounds logical, doesn't it? Each of them seems to have a point. But then, why is it that people like Aadar Jain are launched as leads, without proving their acting ability on any platform, such as professional theatre or television, or even in supporting roles in films?

When the likes of Tusshar Kapoor and Harman Baweja are launched directly by their family members, it is relatively easier to spot the nepotism in action and call them out for it. But what Yash Raj Films and its cousin Dharma Productions do is a little more subtle. Just like how their films are much more polished and refined than the average Bollywood flick, these production houses have added finesse to a morally corrupt practice and made it virtually invisible.

For years, YRF has either launched members of Bollywood's elite families, or repeatedly cast them in films despite their poor box office records. Bachna Ae Haseeno: a star vehicle handed to Ranbir Kapoor after his first film flopped. Band Baaja Baaraat: a launch vehicle for Ranveer Singh, nephew of Anil Kapoor by marriage. Ishaqzaade: a launch vehicle for Arjun Kapoor and a way to brand Parineeti Chopra, relative of Priyanka Chopra, a "heroine" rather than a supporting actress.

The entire Dhoom series and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom: attempts to resuscitate Abhishek Bachchan's career despite overwhelming proof that the audience was not into him. Normally, lead actresses are replaced in Bollywood film sequels at the drop of a hat. Esha Deol was dropped from Dhoom 2, and Rimi Sen only made a cameo, but Bachchan and Uday Chopra, despite box office failure throughout their careers, were retained even in the third film.

Rani Mukerji, another Bollywood blue blood, has been cast in 11 YRF productions. Many of them, like Mujhse Dosti Karoge, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Dil Bole Hadippa, and Mardaani, came at times when casting her defied commercial logic. Even Sonam Kapoor was cast in Bewakoofiyaan at a time when her career was at an all-time low.

Feudal practices

On the surface, this exonerates both YRF and these actors from having engaged in or benefited from nepotism. But a closer look reveals that what they do is far worse. Giving opportunities to one's own relatives is prevalent in business and politics as well. But how often does one see a businessman giving an opportunity to the son of another businessman who isn't related to him and is a competitor in the market? How many times does one see a politician's son or daughter being given opportunities by a rival political party?

The practices of YRF and Dharma aren't just nepotistic, but feudal, because... a select group of elites help each other out despite no familial ties and the fact that they're essentially competitors.

The practices of YRF and Dharma aren't just nepotistic, but feudal, because they result in a situation where a select group of elites help each other out despite no familial ties and the fact that they're essentially competitors in a business.

Yash Raj Films' latest release, Qaidi Band, is a product of its sexist and feudal nature. Two people, one a Bollywood blue blood and the other a conventionally attractive model, both with no acting credentials, are being launched as leads by one of the biggest production houses in the country. To make matters worse, both of them were launched at an event by Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, two stars who fit the exact same descriptions at the time of their launch and owe their stardom to Yash Raj Films.

Yash Raj Films has been one of the biggest studios in India for a long time. More importantly, YRF and its founder Yash Chopra have made many of Bollywood's most iconic films. In fact, one can even say that they're responsible for creating a distinct image of mainstream Bollywood cinema in the public consciousness. The difference between them and the average Bollywood production house is the difference between a PM and an MP. What the former does has a much bigger impact than what the latter does. Given their influence, it is high time we begin to question their sexist and feudal practices.

Twitter's Giving Lalu Prasad Yadav A Hard Time Over Allegedly Photoshopped Image Of Rally

In the age of Photoshop and filters, it's tough not to succumb to the temptation of creating a version of reality that most flatters us. Unfortunately, as overenthusiastic fans of PM Modi and the BJP's propaganda machinery have often found out, in addition to being the Photoshop age, this is also the social media age. And all it takes is a whiff of a morphed image to set the watchdogs off on a hunt.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his team are just finding out this bitter truth.

Yesterday, on 27 August, Yadav tweeted a photo of the crowd at his 'BJP Bhagao, Desh Bachao' rally in Patna. He, and other political bigwigs in the opposition like West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav undoubtedly managed to pull an impressive crowd at their anti-BJP rally. However, Yadav decided to tweet this image.

Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu Prasad's son and Bihar's former deputy chief minister, went so far as to claim that there were 30 lakh people at the rally.

A little over an hour after Yadav tweeted the image, news agency Asia News International (ANI) tweeted a photograph from a similar angle, showing a crowd much smaller than the one in Yadav's photo.

And of course, as is wont, jokesters on Twitter were quick to pick jump on to the bandwagon to poke fun at the RJD chief's attempt to mislead people by allegedly 'touching up' the photographs. Witty barbs and hilariously edited versions of the photo started making the rounds of Twitter as #DeshBachao started trending on the micro-blogging site.

A few weeks ago, the RJD lost power in Bihar when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar sent the nation in a tizzy with his dramatic resignation after he left the Mahagathbandhan and joined the National Democratic Alliance, due to Tejashwi Yadav's alleged corruption. Yadav's 'BJP Bhagao, Desh Bachao' rally was an attempt to unite the opposition parties against the increasingly powerful BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Congress' President and Vice-President, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, were conspicuous by their absence, even though Rahul Gandi did send a letter expressing his support for the rally.

Dera Sacha Sauda chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was today sentenced to 10 years in jail by Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) special court judge Jagdeep Singh for the rape and sexual exploitation of two women disciples at the highly secretive cult that has been accused, among other things, of murder and mass castration. He was flown to Rohtak jail and the sentence was announced inside the jail by Singh.

Here are the live updates:

Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 20 years in jail. He has been awarded a 10-year jail sentence and a Rs 15 lakh fine for each of the cases of rape against him, taking the total jail term to 20 years and the total fine to Rs 30 lakh.

Singh has to pay Rs 14lakh to each victim as well, his lawyers told the press.

Singh's lawyer SK Narwana said that both the sentences are not consecutive.

CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal confirmed reports that Singh has got 20 years in jail.

5:30 pm: Army conducts flag marches in Haryana, Punjab

Shortly after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's sentencing, the Army conducted flag marches in Haryana's Sirsa among other areas. There were flag marches conducted in areas of Punjab, like Barnala. During a press conference, the Haryana Police said that there was no confirmed incidents of violence today. They added that they are in the process of identifying the instigators of the violence that unfolded in Panchkula over the weekend and said the criminals won't be spared.

4:20 pm: CBI to demand a harsher sentence?

Citing unnamed sources, NDTV reported that while Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh pleaded for clemency, the Central Bureau of Investigation is actually pushing for a harsher sentence. It is being said, that the CBI has already drafted an application and will move court demanding the convict be granted ten more years in prison. They are also planning to press other charges against him.

However, Singh's lawyers will move High Court against the lower court's verdict.

4:04 pm: ML Khattar calls emergency meeting of senior state officials, party leaders, ministers at his residence in Chandigarh.

3:35 pm: Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh sentenced to 10 years in prison, say reports. Other reports suggest that Singh broke down in court after the sentence was announced.

ANI reports that medical examination is being conducted on Singh and he will soon be handed over jail clothes. One should be reminded that the CBI had set up a special court inside the Sunaria jail to pronounce the sentencing.

3:30 pm: Certain media reports suggest that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh broke down before the CBI judge and pleaded for clemency. NDTV reports that Singh's lawyers pleaded the judge to take into consideration that Singh is a 'social worker' and hence appealed for his sentence to be not harsh. They argued that he has built rehabilitation centres for drug addicts and alcoholics and added that he has married off prostitutes and helped them reconcile with mainstream society.

3:00 pm: Hearing concludes in the sentencing of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. A makeshift court was set up at Sunaria Jail on the fringes of Rohtak where CBI judge Jagdeep Singh was flown in on a helicopter to read out the sentence. A helipad was created in the jail itself.

Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Convicted: Supporters Go On A Rampage

A decade and half after allegations of rape first surfaced against him, self-styled 'godman' Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was pronounced guilty of the crime on 25 August.

The conviction has been pronounced in the special CBI court in Panchkula, Haryana.

Soon after the verdict was read out on 25 August and Sigh escorted to jail on the outskirts of Rohtak, Panchkula fell prey to mindless violence. Thousands of followers of Dera Sacha Sauda, the outfit Singh heads, unleashed their wrath on the city setting public and private property on fire, attacking security personnel and civilians alike. Thirty eight people were left dead in the violence.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Verdict Aftermath: Blood Sport Erupts Across 3 States

Soon after, the Punjab & Haryana High Court pulled the governments at the Centre and the state up accusing them of colluding with the rioters and protecting them for political gains. They questioned how the Haryana government let 1.5 lakh Dera followers descend upon the city when restrictions had already been imposed on large gatherings in view of the verdict. Warning politicians against interfering with the law, the court also asked the government to make sure that the CBI judge and his associates, who will be sentencing Singh, be provided with tight security.

The court also directed the government to attach all Dera properties to compensate for the damages wreaked by its followers on public and private property.

In view of the security, internet services were shut down and riot police were employed in parts of Punjab and Haryana ahead of the sentencing. Schools and colleges have been shut and Sirsa, where the Dera headquarters are located, has been under a lockdown. It has also been reported that shoot-at-sight orders have been issued against miscreants in Rohtak.

Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Convicted: Supporters Go On A Rampage

In April 2002, an anonymous letter was sent to the Punjab & Haryana High Court alleging that the Dera chief had sexually exploited two women in his Sirsa den. Anshul Chhatrapati, the editor of a local vernacular paper Pooa Sach published the letter in his paper. Chhatrapati was shot down outside his house.

The leader's followers have vowed to challenge the conviction in higher courts.

Following is a timeline of the case, published by PTI:

April 2002: Anonymous letter written to Punjab and Haryana High Court chief justice complaining about the sexual exploitation of woman followers at Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa.

May 2002: High court directs Sirsa district and sessions judge to probe the allegations in the letter.

September 2002: High court hands matter to CBI after district court indicates possibility of sexual exploitation.

December 2002: CBI registers a case of rape and criminal intimidation against Gurmeet Ram Rahim, head of the Sirsa headquartered Dera Sacha Sauda.

July 2007: CBI files chargesheet against the Dera head in an Ambala court. The chargesheet refers to the sexual exploitation of two 'sadhvis' (women followers) between 1999 and 2001.

September 2008: The special CBI court frames charges against Gurmeet under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Between 2009 and 2010: Two complainants record their statements before the court.

April 2011: The special CBI court shifts from Ambala to Panchkula. The case against the Dera chief also transferred to Panchkula CBI court.

July 2017: Special CBI court orders daily hearing

August 17, 2017: Arguments of prosecution and defence concludes. Special CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh fixes August 25 as date for pronouncement of verdict. Gurmeet asked to appear in person before the court the same day.

August 25, 2017: The special CBI court convicts Gurmeet.

A policeman from Madhya Pradesh has become the hero of his village after he saved the lives of about 400 children with his fearlessness and presence of mind.

On Friday, 25 August, the police of Chitora village in MP received an anonymous tip about a 10kg bomb in a local school, reported Times of India. The police responded immediately and found the bomb and decided to shut down the school. Fearing for the lives of the 400-odd students on the school's premises, head constable Abhishek Patel decided to take the bomb as far away from the school as he could, risking his own life in the process.

A 12-second video of Patel running towards the hill, jumping over the hills and bushes with the 10kg bomb in his arms has gone viral with watchers praising the policeman on his bravery. "My only objective was to take it away as far from the children as possible. Far away from all residential areas," TOI quoted Patel as saying.

Patel ran for almost a kilometre, carrying the bomb on his person, reported India Today. The idea to run away with the bomb came from a drill he had been a part of, a few months ago, claimed Patel. "Had it exploded, we were told, it would have damaged a radius of 500 meters. I was afraid it would blow up and decided to take it as far away as possible," he said.

The police is currently investigating who planted the bomb, said Inspector General Sagar Saxena.

As a reward for his exemplary courage and sense of duty, chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for Patel.

NEW DELHI -- The Supreme Court today set up a medical board to examine the condition of a 13-year-old rape survivor who is seeking permission to abort her 30-week-old foetus.

A bench comprising Justices S A Bobde and L Nageswara Rao directed that a medical board would be constituted at Mumbai- based Sir J J Group of Hospitals to examine the minor girl and ascertain the condition and advisability of permitting abortion.

"The aforesaid board shall submit a report about the condition and advisability of permitting a medical termination of pregnancy of the petitioner's daughter forthwith," the bench said and fixed the matter for hearing on August 31.

Section 3(2)(b) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act prohibits abortion of a foetus after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

The minor girl's mother, through advocate Sneha Mukharjee, had moved the apex court seeking its permission to terminate the pregnancy of her daughter.

The bench also issued notice to the Centre and directed that copy of the plea be supplied to the Solicitor General.

The top court had on July 28 rejected on medical grounds a petition filed by another 10-year-old rape victim seeking its nod to terminate her 32-week-old pregnancy.

The court's order had come after taking note of a medical report that abortion would neither be good for the girl, nor for the foetus. The minor girl had recently delivered a child in Chandigarh.

ROHTAK -- A special CBI court today sentenced Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh to 20 years in prison after his conviction in two rape cases.

CBI Judge Jagdeep Singh pronounced two sentences of 10 years rigorous imprisonment in each of the two cases that date back to 2002, said defence lawyer S K Garg Narwana.

He said both sentences will run consecutively for a total of 20 years in jail for the guru who has millions of followers and counts politicians as well as celebrities as his friends.

Singh also fined him Rs 15 lakh in each of the two cases, of which Rs 14 lakh each would go to the two victims who were part of his sect and were coerced into having sex with him.

The defence counsel sought leniency from the court arguing that Ram Rahim was active in social work and had health issues. He said he will appeal against the orders in a high court.

The sentence was passed in a special courtroom set up inside the Sunaria jail where Ram Rahim, the 50-year-old self-proclaimed godman, is lodged since last Friday after he was convicted.

Media reports said he broke down and begged for forgiveness with folded hands when the first sentence was passed.

LONDON -- Three Wipro employees were among eight Indians and British-Indians killed in a deadly accident on a highway in southern England in which a mini bus got crushed between two trucks, in one of the worst road accidents in the country in decades.

Two lorry drivers have been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Three passengers, including a five-year-old girl, are fighting for their lives.

The bus was carrying a group of 11 passengers who were being driven to London to meet a coach which was taking them on a last minute holiday to France.

Three of the six men and two women who lost their lives in the pile-up have now been named Indian nationals who were working for Nottingham firm Capital One.

"It is with deep regret and sadness that we confirm the passing away of three of our colleagues, Karthikeyan Ramasubramaniyam Pugalur, Rishi Rajeev Kumar, and Vivek Bhaskaran in a tragic road accident in the UK," a spokesman for Wipro, the agency which had arranged the contracts, said.

Another employee, Mano Ranjan Panneerselvam, is one of those critically injured in hospital along with the five- year-old girl who is understood to be the daughter of one of the other passengers.

Panneerselvam's wife and mother are said by relatives to be the other women who were hospitalised, whilst three of his family members are understood to be among the dead.

Cyriac Joseph, the 52-year-old owner of Nottingham-based ABC Travels and driver of the minibus who was born in India, was among those who lost their lives in the pile-up.

He had been hired to take the group from Nottingham to London when the crash happened near Newport Pagnell in Buckinghamshire in the early hours of Saturday morning.

His friend Manu Zachariah paid tribute to Joseph, also known as Benny.

Zachariah said: "Cyriac was not like normal fathers. He would love to spend his money and time on his children like none of his friends. He was always very encouraging of their extracurricular activities. His son is an athlete and he would take him to javelin training.

"He was an extraordinary father, and would do anything for his friends. He was always there for us and will be really missed."

Ryszard Masierak of Evesham, Worcestershire, has been accused of eight counts of causing death by dangerous driving, four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and eight counts of causing death by careless driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit.

The 31-year-old appeared before High Wycombe Magistrates' Court today and has been remanded in custody.

David Wagstaff, 53, of Stoke-on-Trent, is charged with eight counts of causing death by dangerous driving and four counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Wagstaff has been bailed to appear before Milton Keynes Magistrates' Court on September 11.

Brett Smith, who passed the scene in a taxi before the emergency services arrived and stopped to help the little girl, said: "A family has been destroyed. I held a little girl by her arms, trapped inside a vehicle, for a good hour or so with the emergency services and the fire service trying to help.

"I walked home with a blanket that the ambulance service provided me to stay warm because the little girl has got my jacket to keep herself safe. The fire and ambulances services did a really good job."

Chief Inspector Henry Parsons, from the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing at Thames Valley Police, said: "Some of those involved were visiting the UK from India and we are working to keep families abroad informed."

KALYAN, Maharashtra -- The Central Railways on Tuesday confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported after few coaches of the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express derailed near the Titwala station, a small town in Maharashtra's Kalyan.

"No casualties, no injuries have been reported as of now. The derailment has happened between Asangaon and Vasind station of the 12290 Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express. The engine and seven coaches have derailed," Central Railways's Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Sunil Udasi told ANI.

He also said that elaborate arrangement were made with the help of state government to ply passengers through buses from the accident sites to the CSMT.

"Senior officers including the GM immediately left for the site - within 15 minutes of receiving the information. The doctors have reached the site. We have made elaborate arrangements with the help of the state government to ply passengers through buses from the accident sites to the CSMT," he said.

He further said that only the sub-urban services between Kalyan and Kasara have been affected.

"The local services are normal. Only the sub-urban services between Kalyan and Kasara have been affected," he added.

The CPRO has further said that as many as nine coaches have been affected and prima facie, a major landslide is said to be the reason behind the derailment.

Meanwhile, four trains have been diverted due to the derailment via Kalyan-Lonavala-Pune-Daund-Manmad.

This is the fourth incident of train derailment within 10 days.

On 25 August, a local train running on Mumbai's Harbour line derailed, while it was returning to the Mahim platform.

Saving the first four coaches, a technical fault caused the derailment of coaches six, seven, eight, and nine.

Five-six persons sustained minor injuries, but no case of casualties or major injuries were recorded.

On 23 August, the Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya district. As many as 81 people were injured.

On 19 August, the Kalinga Utkal Express had also derailed in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar killing 22 people and injuring over 200.

In the aftermath, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had offered to resign, taking moral responsibility for the accidents under his watch, but was asked by the Prime Minister to "wait".

What My Grandmother’s Death Taught Me About How A Life Is Really Measured

$

Recently, as I was sifting through the ashes of my grandmother trying to find the last few solid pieces of bone (to be taken to Haridwar to be immersed in the Ganges per Hindu tradition), I reflected on the purpose of life, on the way human beings are judged and how life is really so short. When we are born we weigh about 3kg (7lbs), and the lifeless pieces of bone that get left behind are also about 3kg.

Some gut feeling encouraged me to visit my grandmother during the last week of her life and I spent a few precious hours with Biji (as we fondly addressed her). Her favourite topics of conversation hadn't changed in years. Worrying about the unmarried, the unwell and the childless in the family. At 88, she had an elephant's memory and a sharp mind. She treated the welfare of her six brothers, four daughters, their kids, and about 100 souls on her direct radar as her God-given responsibility.

She had an almost perfect set of "eulogy virtues"—clearly visible in the moist eyes of the 350-odd people who came to bid her a final goodbye.

The futility of her worries almost always irked all her grandchildren. We'd then make fun and laugh and she'd get annoyed. But what a towering personality she had. Everyone respected her, was even scared of her. And then one day she didn't wake up. Passed away peacefully. And emotionally orphaned so many of us.

At the funeral I was overwhelmed to see over 350 people who travelled major distances for this 88-year-old woman and that's when I got some rather significant life lessons.

Your 'life résumé' transcends your 'career résumé'

In this short and insignificant life (on which I wrote a piece earlier) and on your last day on earth, no one will judge you for the car you drove, or the size of the house you built or the money you made. People will remember you for the love and affection that you left behind and the respect you garnered through your deeds.

We fret way too much over updating our career résumés and LinkedIn profiles. All of this is important as a small means to an end and in the 80-year runway that a human being has, but don't lose sight for a second of your life résumé.

The only thing that matters (as David Brook says) is the "obituary/eulogy virtues."

This 88-year-old partially educated woman had weathered the Partition of India, lost her husband at 44, a son when he was 38, and had lived hand to mouth for much of her life. Yet she had an almost perfect set of "eulogy virtues"—clearly visible in the moist eyes of the 350-odd people who came to bid her a final goodbye.

Build a metaphoric Taj Mahal

Does anyone remember Babur in 1526 and how the Mughal Empire was established? In the years between 1526 and 1857 art, architecture, language, textile, shipbuilding and steel-making was so evolved that by 1750, India produced 25% of the world's industrial output. Yet what symbolises that era more than anything else is Shah Jahan'sTaj Mahal built in 1632, despite all the architectural advancements since that time. It's pertinent to note that Shah Jahan died a prisoner, not able to fully appreciate his creation, but the rest of the world still does.

People who compromise on principles and values die every single day in the already limited time they have on earth.

Fact is, you will be remembered if you create a Taj Mahal (symbolic). Else you are just whiling away time in a futile hope to leave a mark. For longevity after you're gone, an achievement must be somehow transcendent. Bill and Melinda Gates will be remembered for their contribution in eradicating many diseases more than for Microsoft. Anyone who judges you on a so-called QOQ or YOY and anyone who feels pressured by the same is just misguided.

Would anyone remember the stock price of Amazon or Apple, 50 years from now? Present innovations and technologies will be obsolete in less than 50 years and most of the companies and human beings alive today will be dead.

It amuses me when I hear of jargon such as "wealth creation", "competitive advantage" etc etc. It's all so shallow and meaningless.

Endeavour to do something remarkable that will last beyond a quarter or a year or 10 years. When collectively each one of us on this planet endeavours to create a symbolic Taj Mahal, many Taj Mahals will eventually come up.

Don't live in grey areas

My grandmother operated her life in a binary manner—pass/fail, good/bad, right/wrong. It surprises me that everything in the present world is grey nowadays. He is good but, he is right but, we should do this but, I agree with you but let me come back to you...

In this short life, have the courage to stand by your values and convictions. People who compromise on principles and values die every single day in the already limited time they have on earth.

I will miss you Biji—you led a simple and graceful life and your death taught me the resume I would want to build in life.
