'Unacceptable': NASA Says India's A-Sat Missile Test, Mission Shakti, Endangered Lives Of ISS Astronauts

WASHINGTON — The head of NASA Tuesday branded India’s destruction of one of its satellites a “terrible thing” that had created 400 pieces of orbital debris and led to new dangers for astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

Jim Bridenstine was addressing employees of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration five days after India shot down a low-orbiting satellite in a missile test to prove it was among the world’s advanced space powers.

Not all of the pieces were big enough to track, Bridenstine explained. “What we are tracking right now, objects big enough to track ― we’re talking about 10 centimeters (six inches) or bigger ― about 60 pieces have been tracked.”

The Indian satellite was destroyed at a relatively low altitude of 180 miles (300 kilometers), well below the ISS and most satellites in orbit.

But 24 of the pieces “are going above the apogee of the International Space Station,” said Bridenstine.

“That is a terrible, terrible thing to create an event that sends debris at an apogee that goes above the International Space Station,” he continued, adding: “That kind of activity is not compatible with the future of human spaceflight.”

“It’s unacceptable and NASA needs to be very clear about what its impact to us is.”

The US military tracks objects in space to predict the collision risk for the ISS and for satellites.

They are currently tracking 23,000 objects larger than 10 centimeters.

That includes about 10,000 pieces of space debris, of which nearly 3,000 were created by a single event: a Chinese anti-satellite test in 2007 at 530 miles from the surface.

As a result of the Indian test, the risk of collision with the ISS has increased by 44 percent over 10 days, Bridenstine said.

But the risk will dissipate over time as much of the debris will burn up as it enters the atmosphere.

Ivanka Trump Hails Women's History Month, And Her Critics Can't Stand The Hypocrisy

Ivanka Trump gave a shout-out to Women’s History Month as it was ending — and her critics on Twitter predictably reminded her of her dad’s battle to end women’s reproductive choice, his administration’s slashing of the education budget, and his boasts about a certain part of the female anatomy.

The first daughter has been jockeying to position herself as a champion of women, a booster of their careers and accomplishments, and a supporter of improving education for girls. But it’s a tough sell, given the record of the administration that she’s a part of.

The Trump administration just proposedbillions of dollars of cuts to the education budget. It also aims to slash an educational program provided by NASA to boost engagement in science, technology, engineering and math — the kind of operation the first daughter touts for girls.

Another startling incongruity in Trump’s post was a video she shared that opens with a Latina girl working on a model of a wind turbine. Commenters noted that Donald Trump is fighting to keep Latin American immigrants out of the U.S. — or caging them. He has also mocked wind power, saying it can’t work because wind “only blows sometimes” and then TVs would shut off.

Polish Priests Burn Harry Potter, Twilight Books In Protest Of The Occult

A group of Polish Roman Catholic priests has burned books and other objects they believe promote magic and sorcery, ― including books from British author J.K. Rowling’s wildly popular Harry Potter series.

The burning took place at the Mother of Church parish in the northern Polish city of Gdansk, The Associated Press reported. Photos from the burning, accompanied by Bible verses and excerpts from Catholic doctrine, were posted on a Polish Catholic Facebook group on Sunday.

“We obey the Word,” the post read, according to a translation by the BBC.

The images show priests and two altar boys sorting through a pile of books and other objects near the church’s altar. The objects were carried in a basket down the church nave and burned in a pit outside.

Novels from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series about vampires and a book about the Indian guru Baghwan Shree Rajneesh could be spotted in photos of the pile of books. A wooden mask, elephant figurines and a pink Hello Kitty umbrella were also burned.

The objects were all brought in by parishioners, who were encouraged by the priests to cleanse their homes of objects related to the occult, the AP reported.

The Polish Catholic bishops’ conference confirmed to Agence France-Presse that the incident had occurred but declined to comment. HuffPost has reached out to the local diocese.

The book burning garnered international attention after it was posted online by the SMS from Heaven Foundation (Fundacja SMS Z NIEBA), an evangelical Catholic group based in the nearby Koszalin diocese. The post cites Bible verses that condemn sorcery. One verse, Acts 19:19, tells of how early Christian converts who previously practiced magic publicly burned their sorcery scrolls.

The SMS from Heaven Foundation also cited lines from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which condemns the use of horoscopes, palmistry, charms and other types of divination or magic.

Many commenters criticized the book burning on Facebook ― pointing out that books were also burned by the Nazi regime.

Rev. Wojciech Parafianowicz, a spokesman for the Koszalin diocese, told the Polish news site wPolityce.pl that he condemned the act of book burning but understood the priests’ desire to educate parishioners about Catholic teachings.

Parafianowicz said occult practices “have a bad influence on human life,” according to a translation provided by the AP.

The Roman Catholic Church has long been an influential part of Polish society. At least three-quarters of adults in Poland (87 percent) identify as Catholic, according to the Pew Research Center ― making it one of Europe’s most Catholic countries.

However, allegations of sexual misconduct by Polish Catholic clergy have recently marred the church’s reputation, the Guardian reports.

British MPs Fail To Agree Upon A Plan To Break The Brexit Deadlock, Again

More rows have broken out among MPs after parliament again failed to agree a single proposal to break the Brexit deadlock for a second time.

The second round of ‘indicative votes’ on four alternatives to Theresa May’s troubled deal failed to produce a majority for anything at all.

A call for a customs union with the EU was rejected by just three votes, while a demand for a second referendum was defeated by 12 and a Norway-style deal put forward by Nick Boles by 21.

In another dramatic day in the Commons, Boles immediately declared that he would no longer sit as a Conservative MP - blaming the party for refusing to compromise on a means of leaving the European Union.

The prime minister will now consider what course of action to take given MPs have rejected her deal, no deal, and all the alternatives.

Cabinet ministers will meet for five hours on Tuesday to try and thrash out a way through the mess, but few are expecting a decision to be reached that satisfies both Leavers and Remainers in May’s top team.

Speaker John Bercow announced the results as follows for the indicative votes procedure:

Motion C (customs union) defeated by 276 votes to 273, majority three.

Motion D (Common market 2.0) defeated by 282 votes to 261, majority 21.

Motion E (second referendum) rejected by 292 votes to 280, majority 12.

Motion G (no-deal or revoke) rejected by 292 votes to 191, majority 101.

The failure of any option to gain a majority in the Commons left the UK no clearer about its direction with the prospect of a no-deal Brexit on April 12.

Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay told the House of Commons that the default legal position is that the UK will leave the EU in 11 days’ time and that to secure an extension Britain must provide a “credible” plan.

He went on that if the Commons is able to agree a deal this week, it would still be possible to avoid European Parliament elections in May.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it was “disappointing” that none of the options had won a majority, but said MPs should have a chance to consider them again on Wednesday.

Boles, a former minister, was applauded by some MPs after he quit the Conservative Party after his Brexit alternative plan was defeated for a second time.

Raising a point of order, he told the Commons: “I have given everything to an attempt to find a compromise that can take this country out of the European Union while maintaining our economic strength and our political cohesion.

“I accept I have failed. I have failed chiefly because my party refuses to compromise.

“I regret therefore to announce I can no longer sit for this party.”

Tory MP Huw Merriman MP could be heard saying: “Oh Nick, don’t go, come on.”

Merriman, an aide to Chancellor Philip Hammond, later pointed out how the People’s Vote had achieved the highest number of votes of the alternatives.

“Let’s ask the people if they can put the prime minister’s deal through,” he told the BBC’s Newsnight.

He also attacked Steve Baker,  the lead Brexiteer who had earlier told SkyNews: “Everyone knows I’m ‘Brexit hardman Steve Baker’ - as far as I’m aware.”

Merriman said Baker was “like Dad’s Army without the rations”.

“The reality is these people are living in a deluded land,” he said.

“We can either carry on going for the next 10 years or we face realistic positions.

“Parliament has failed people, I’m embarrassed about that.”

But bitter divisions emerged within Labour ranks as well as the Tories, after it emerged that 33 of the party’s MPs abstained on the Common Market proposals.

Stephen Kinnock, who had pushed the Boles plan for a Norway-style exit, told HuffPost UK: “I am deeply, deeply disappointed by the fact that 33 Labour MPs campaigning for a second referendum abstained on Common Market 2.0.

“Many of us have deep reservations about a second referendum but we put those reservations aside and voted for it but unfortunately that wasn’t reciprocated.”

Analysis of Monday’s votes showed some 25 Labour MPs rebelled against their party whip to vote against the Boles plan, tabled under the banner Common Market 2.0.

Just 33 Conservatives backed the scheme, which would keep the UK in the single market with a “comprehensive customs arrangement” with the EU after Brexit.

The European Parliament’s Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt tweeted that when the Commons next voted on Wednesday, it would have to finally come to a consensus or face leaving the EU without a deal.

MPs have control of proceedings in the Commons for a third time on Wednesday, but Speaker John Bercow said it was not yet clear what debates and votes will be staged.

The mastermind of the plan, Conservative former minister Sir Oliver Letwin, is expected to set out his proposals on Tuesday.

Tory Brexit hardliners pressed the Prime Minister to now take a tougher line with Brussels.

Tory MP and European Research Group (ERG) vice-chairman Mark Francois said: “This evening, an attempted coup took place in the House of Commons, involving leading members of the Cabinet and backbenchers to prevent Brexit. The coup failed.”

Prominent Brexiteer Nigel Farage tweeted “Nothing has changed” after MPs rejected all four Brexit alternatives tabled for the second round of the indicative vote process.

Farage was quote-tweeting his own tweet from March 27, in which he had written: “No majority for anything in Parliament, but there is a majority in the country to leave the EU.”

Giant Boobs Appear Around London To Destigmatise Breastfeeding In Public

Giant inflatable breasts have been spotted around London – and no, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke. It’s actually for an important cause.

The boobs, which vary in size, shape and colour, appeared in four locations in the early hours of Sunday morning to coincide with Mother’s Day. They form part of a campaign to fight the stigma around breastfeeding and pumping milk in public.

Tania Boler, CEO of femtech firm Elvie, which came up with the campaign, said: “The #FreetheFeed campaign is an invitation to everyone to stand with all those women that have felt shamed or confined when breastfeeding or pumping.

“We know the giant boobs will raise a few eyebrows, but we want to make sure no one overlooks the way that this stigma has been used to repress women.”

One of the boobs cropped up at London's Colombia Road flower market.

The new campaign aims to empower women to feel safe and comfortable breastfeeding or pumping anytime, anywhere and encourage the British public to support them.

Sadly, stigma is still rife when it comes to breastfeeding and women are still being told to cover up while feeding their child in public.

A survey from earlier this year found one in three breastfeeding mums have been forced to use the toilet at work to express milk.

[Read More: 16 Things You Only Know If You’ve Breastfed An Actual, Human Baby]

In the survey of 2,000 women who breastfed in the past five years, more than half had to pump in an unsuitable place – including the staff room, their car or at their desk – and highlighted a lack of workplace support after having a baby.

Almost a third said they experienced problems while trying to express, including issues with their supply, infections and anxiety. These difficulties resulted in 30% of mums stopping earlier than they would have liked.

It is hoped that the inflatable boobs – which are stationed at Tanja’s Roof, in the heart of east London, Neutral on Colombia Road, Ely’s Yard in Brick Lane and Huntingdon Estate, Shoreditch – will help kickstart conversations around breastfeeding and, ultimately, normalise it.

They certainly made passers-by look up.

2 Women Accuse Magician David Blaine Of Sexual Assault

Two women have accused celebrity magician David Blaine of sexual assault, the New York Police Department has confirmed. Dermot Shea, NYPD’s chief of detectives, said Blaine was “under active investigation” by the department’s Special Victims Unit.

The performance artist offered no comment when approached by the Daily Beast, which first reported the allegations on Monday. He said only that he’d not been contacted by police.

CNN, citing unnamed sources, said at least one of the allegations may fall outside the statute of limitations. One of Blaine’s accusers told authorities she was sexually assaulted by the magician inside his Manhattan apartment in 1998, the Beast reported.

Two years ago, Blaine was investigated by Scotland Yard after former model Natasha Prince accused him of raping her in London in 2004 ― an allegation Blaine vehemently denied. After investigating Prince’s claim, detectives said they chose to take “no further action.”

Blaine is known for his death-defying stunts, including being buried underground in a plexiglass coffin for a week and being suspended in a glass box above the River Thames in London for 44 days.

NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to accord urgent hearing to Congress leader Hardik Patel’s plea challenging the Gujarat High Court order rejecting stay on his conviction in the 2015 Vispur rioting case.

The matter was mentioned for urgent listing before a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra.

The bench also comprising Justices MM Shantanagoudar and Navin Sinha told the counsel appearing for Patel that there was no urgency in hearing the matter as the high court order was passed in August last year.

“The order was passed in August 2018. What is the urgency now?” the bench said while refusing to accord urgent hearing on the petition.

Patel, 25, had started preparations to contest from Jamnagar on a Congress ticket after joining the party on 12 March and the last date for filing of nominations is 4 April.

‘Asking RSS Not To Be Communal Is Like Asking The Pope To Be Protestant’

Former President Pranab Mukherjee, right, speaks with Mohan Bhagwat, RSS Chief, in July 2018. In recent years, the RSS has sought to project a more inclusive image by inviting prominent personalities to its events as well as holding special lecture sessions like the one in which Bhagwat gave three lectures over as many days in Delhi last year to reach out to skeptics.

NEW DELHI―The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) made contradictory claims during legal proceedings in multiple government institutions and courts in the 1970s, writes lawyer and political commentator AG Noorani in his soon-to-be-released book RSS: A Menace To India. Relying on documents of legal proceedings initiated by Nagpur resident and RSS follower Dr. Manoharkant Dayalji Kamdar, Noorani says that the RSS claimed before the Charity Commissioner of Maharashtra that it was not a charitable trust but a political institution. It, however, told the Bombay High Court that it is “a charitable institution under Section 10(22) of the Income-Tax Act, 1961”.

Noorani told HuffPost India in an interview that the organisation’s contradictory claims are relevant even today because of the “deceit” involved.

“They say one thing to the Charity Commissioner—that we are not a trust—and another thing to the tax authorities: that we are a trust,” he said.

Some of Noorani’s revelations in the book, which has been published by Leftword Books, are also significant because the RSS has maintained for years that it is only a “cultural” organisation with no political ambitions. In fact, Article 4 (c) of the RSS’ written constitution clearly says, “The Sangh is aloof from politics and is devoted to social and cultural fields only.”

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s lecture series last year to reach out to its critics could not persuade anybody, added Noorani, as the RSS could not be anything but communal in its philosophy.

“You can’t ask the Pope to become Protestant. This is their philosophy and outlook,” he said.

Edited excerpts from an interview:

1) Why have you called the RSS a menace in your book?

Because its whole outlook is undemocratic, (has a) fascist leadership principle. (It follows (a) hate ideology, secret working and deceit and (has) complicity in riots.

2) Late last year, the Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat did what was billed as an outreach towards the sceptics and critics of the RSS through a three-day long series of lectures. What do you make of the initiative?

I think it was a PR campaign. That’s all.

3) It failed to persuade you?

It failed to persuade not only me but anybody. I can’t think of anybody who was persuaded. In fact the media ridiculed it. And on the last day he said just the thing for which he has been criticised.

Look, this is the party which floated the VHP in 1964, Jan Sangh in 1951 and the BJP in 1980. And it has since thrown out three party presidents―Mauli Chandra Sharma, Balraj Madhok and latest (LK) Advani. You see, people say, ‘let it become a conservative and non-communal party’. You can’t do that. You can’t ask the Pope to become Protestant. This is their philosophy and outlook.

You see, people say, ‘let it (the RSS) become a conservative and non-communal party’. You can’t do that. You can’t ask the Pope to become Protestant. This is their philosophy and outlook: A G Noorani

4) In the book you write that during the legal proceedings before the Charity Commissioner and Income Tax office in the 1970s, the RSS made contradictory claims about itself to the two authorities as well as amended its constitution, apart from disclosing the possibility that the organisation may take the form of a political party in the future. What prompted you to write about the proceedings at such length and why are they relevant today?

They are relevant today because of the deceit. Because they (the RSS) say one thing to the Charity Commissioner—that we are not a trust—and another thing to the tax authorities: that we are a trust. It’s all there in the book.

5) But there is one question left unanswered in the book which is, what happened eventually to the cases?

I have not got the material (about what happened to the cases) so I have to be honest. (Whatever material) I had from Dr (Manoharkant Dayalji) Kamdar (of the RSS), I have used it in the book. After that, I couldn’t follow it. It’s not fully reported.

6) You also mention that the RSS won its appeal in the Court of S.M. Mandika, ‘Extra Assistant Judge, Nagpur’, on 1 February 1987 in the matter and the Charity Commissioner appealed it in the Bombay High Court. So what is the argument you are trying to make in the book?

The argument is that the whole ideology is not of a trust but a political party.

7) You also wrote that the RSS expressed a possibility at one point during the legal proceedings that, in the future, it could become a political party.

Yes, it is there in Miscellaneous Application No. 17 of 1978 filed in the court of the District Judge, Nagpur.

Cover of the soon to be launched book published by Leftword Books and authored by respected constitutional expert, lawyer and political commentator A G Noorani.

8) So why do you find it problematic if it were to be a political entity, specifically a political party?

It has already got one political entity―the BJP.

9) Yes, but converting itself into a political entity is what was written in the application cited by you in the book.

Let it do it, it will be more honest.

10) Appended to the main text of the book are letters between MS Golwalkar and Jawaharlal Nehru in which the latter uses two rather strong adjectives to describe the RSS—“anti-national” and “violent”. This was in the first decade of the nascent Republic’s formation and now we are in the eighth decade. Has anything changed since then?

Things have not changed. On the contrary, RSS was involved in a lot of riots and all that.

11) Why do you believe Nehru’s contention that it was an anti-national force?

Nehru himself has given the reasons: secret working, fascist principle.

12) And the claim about the RSS being violent: do you believe it still exists?

I have given a whole chapter on the riots.

BJP Won't Give Tickets To Muslims Because They Don't Trust Us, Says Karanataka BJP Leader

KS Eshwarappa, Karnataka BJP leader and former deputy chief minister of Karnataka, said during a speech on Monday that his party would not give tickets to Muslims because Muslims don’t trust the BJP.

Eshwarappa also hit out at the Congress claiming the party only treated Muslims as vote banks.

ANI reported Eshwarappa as saying, “Congress uses you only as a vote bank, doesn’t give you ticket. We won’t give Muslims tickets because you don’t believe in us. Believe us and we’ll give you tickets and other things.”

Eshwarappa is known to make communal remarks. In January, 2018 Eshwarappa had said that Muslims associated with the Congress were bad Muslims. “Muslims who have killed 22 RSS and BJP activists are with the Congress and those who are good Muslims are with the BJP. Muslims who are killers are with the Congress,” he had said

'Will Of The People': Mayawati Justifies Her Statues In Affidavit To Supreme Court

NEW DELHI — BSP supremo Mayawati Tuesday defended in the Supreme Court the construction of life-size statues of herself in Uttar Pradesh, saying they represent the “will of the people”.

The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, in an affidavit filed in the apex court, said the memorials and statues of herself and other leaders are “intended to promote values and ideals of various sants, gurus, social reformers and leaders among the public and not intended to promote the symbol of BSP or to glorify” her.

Mayawati said in her affidavit that her statues came into being “as the will of the state legislature to represent the will of the people”.

She said funds for construction of the memorial and installation of statues were sanctioned through budgetary allocations after approval of the budget by the state legislature.

Mayawati also sought the dismissal of a plea, which alleged that pubic funds were misused in the construction of memorials and statues, saying it is politically motivated and a gross abuse of process of court of law.

CHENNAI — Veteran filmmaker J Mahendran, known for infusing realism in Tamil cinema and for giving superstar Rajinikanth his career breakthrough with Mullum Malarum, died here on Tuesday at the age of 79.

The filmmaker passed away after a brief illness at his residence, a source close to the family said.

He was in the hospital for about a week for kidney related ailments and was discharged on Monday.

His last rites will be held on later in the day at his suburban residence.

He is survived by son John who is also a film director.

Mahendran was introduced to the world of cinema as a critic while working as a sub-editor in a Tamil magazine during his student days.

He started his journey in the movies as a screenplay writer and made his directorial debut with the 1978 film Mullum Malarum, featuring Rajinikanth in the lead.

Later, Mahendran and Rajinikanth worked on films like Kaali and Johnny.

The director’s popularity peaked with his movies Uthiri Pookkal (1979) and Nenjathai Killathey (1980).

In the past few years, Mahendran had switched to acting. He played pivotal parts in Kamaraj (2004), Petta opposite Rajinikanth and Vijay’s Theri. He was last seen in Tamil film Boomerang, which released on March 8.

Mahendran was also the founding member of Blue Ocean Film and Television Academy here.

Speaking to PTI, the filmmaker’s long time associate and producer G Dhananjayan said Mahendra redefined the Tamil cinema at a time when it was dominated by the trend of delivering lengthy dialogues.

“He brought the touch of realism into Tamil cinema and it made people connect more to his movies. Mahendran is the forefather of realistic Tamil cinema,” Dhananjayan added.

Many from the Tamil film industry paid homage to the director.

Congress Releases Manifesto For 2019 Polls, Says Reflects 'Voice Of People'

Congress on Tuesday released its manifesto for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls

Party president Rahul Gandhi said that the manifesto is a big step for the Congress and manifesto panel has delivered the voice of the people. “When we started this process a year back, I told them that this manifesto should reflect the wishes of the people and whatever is present in the document should be truthful,” he was quoted as saying by The Indian Express

Taking about the minimum income scheme, he said that the poor and the farmers will get money directly in their pockets. He also said there are 2.2 million government job vacancies and by March 2020, these posts will be filled.

The Congress chief added that if his party is elected to power, its government would spend six percent of the GDP on education. Congress proposes to have separate ‘kisan budget’ and make non-payment of loans by farmers a civil offence instead of a criminal one, he added.

Congress will work to unite the people, he said, while accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi government of dividing the society and spreading hatred.

Senior party leader P Chidambaram asserted that “wealth and welfare” is the manifesto’s central theme.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that the purpose of the Congress manifesto is to spell out vision of moving towards forward-looking and inclusive economy and polity.

Chidambaram said that BJP is trying to take the narrative to hyper nationalism and the Congress has to bring narrative to real issues. He added that the real issues in the country are unemployment, farmer distress and women’s safety, among others.

WhatsApp Introduces ‘Tipline’ In India Ahead Of Lok Sabha Polls To Curb Fake News

NEW DELHI — WhatsApp Tuesday unveiled its ‘Checkpoint Tipline’, where people can check the authenticity of information received as the messaging giant looks to crack down on fake news ahead of the general election in the country.

“Launched by PROTO, an India-based media skilling startup, this tipline will help create a database of rumours to study misinformation during elections for Checkpoint - a research project commissioned and technically assisted by WhatsApp,” the Facebook-owned company said in a statement.

It added that starting Tuesday, people in India can submit misinformation or rumours they receive to the Checkpoint Tipline on WhatsApp (+91-9643-000-888)

Once a WhatsApp user shares a suspicious message with the tipline, PROTO’s verification centre will seek to respond and inform the user if the claim made in message shared is verified or not.

“The response will indicate if information is classified as true, false, misleading, disputed or out of scope and include any other related information that is available,” the statement said.

This centre is equipped to review content in the form of pictures, video links or text and will cover English and four regional languages - Hindi, Telugu, Bengali and Malayalam.

PROTO will also look at working with organisations at grassroot level to submit misinformation circulating across different regions in India during the election period.

Facebook, which counts India as one of its largest markets with over 200 million users, had faced flak from the Indian government after a series of mob-lynching incidents, triggered by rumours circulating on WhatsApp, claimed lives last year.

Under pressure to stop rumours and fake news, WhatsApp had last year restricted forwarding messages to five chats at once. It has also been putting out advertisements in newspapers and running television and radio campaigns offering tips to users on how to spot misinformation.

With ensuing general elections, the Indian government had warned social media platforms of strong action if any attempt was made to influence the country’s electoral process through undesirable means.

Interestingly, the Indian government through proposed changes in IT rules is seeking to make social media platforms more accountable by mandating them to introduce tools that can identify and disable “unlawful content”.

One of the amendments being mulled in the IT intermediary rules (meant for online and social media platforms) will require them to enable tracing out of such originators of information as needed by government agencies that are legally authorised.

However, WhatsApp has so far resisted the government’s demand for identifying message originators, arguing that such a move would undermine the end-to-end encryption and the private nature of the platform, creating potential for serious misuse.

In its statement on Tuesday, WhatsApp said Dig Deeper Media and Meedan - which have previously worked on misinformation-related projects around the world - are helping PROTO to develop the verification and research frameworks for India.

Meedan has developed the technology to support the verification of rumours and will maintain the database of such content that have been processed.

“The goal of this project is to study the misinformation phenomenon at scale natively in WhatsApp. As more data flows in, we will be able to identify the most susceptible or affected issues, locations, languages, regions, and more"

To do so, they have expanded their check platform (developed for recent elections in Mexico and France) and integrated it with the WhatsApp Business API, to receive and respond to messages at scale.

“The goal of this project is to study the misinformation phenomenon at scale natively in WhatsApp. As more data flows in, we will be able to identify the most susceptible or affected issues, locations, languages, regions, and more,” PROTO founders Ritvvij Parrikh and Nasr ul Hadi said.

The verification reports PROTO sends back will encourage grassroots-level “listening posts” to send more signals for analysis, they added.

Following the project, PROTO also plans to submit learnings to the International Center for Journalists to help other organisations learn from the design and operations of this project.

“The research from this initiative will help create a global benchmarks for those wishing to tackle misinformation in their own markets,” Fergus Bell, founder and CEO, Dig Deeper Media, said.

Kalyan Singh Violated Poll Code In Calling For Modi's Win, Concludes EC

NEW DELHI — Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh’s remarks supporting the return of Narendra Modi as prime minister are violative of model code of conduct, the Election Commission has concluded.

Sources said since Singh holds a constitutional post, the Election Commission will write to President Ram Nath Kovind, flagging the issue.

The poll panel had examined the remarks made by the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister in the light of model code violation as holding a constitutional post makes him “apolitical”.

Addressing BJP workers at his Aligarh residence on 23 March, Singh reportedly said, “All of us are BJP workers and we want the party to win. We want Modiji to become the prime minister. It is necessary that Modiji becomes the Prime Minister again.”

The Governor made these remarks to placate some agitated BJP members who gathered outside his house over ticket distribution.

In the 1990s, the Election Commission had expressed displeasure to then Himachal Pradesh Governor Gulsher Ahmed for campaigning for his son. He later quit.

‘At Least You Can Get Pregnant’ And Other Things Not To Say After Miscarriage

Here are a few expert-backed ideas for how to talk to women who’ve experienced a pregnancy loss.

Miscarriage has gone from being a thing that women and their partners basically never talked about in public to one that is far less taboo. And with good reason. Anywhere between 10 and 25 percent of known pregnancies ends in a miscarriage. It is, as Jessica Zucker, a Los Angeles-based psychologist specializing in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health, reminded HuffPost, a “normal outcome of pregnancy.”

But for all the work that has been done on social media, in articles and essays and even by celebrities to break down the secrecy and stigma around pregnancy loss, we’re still surprisingly crappy at knowing how to talk to women when they’re in the throes of it. Which means that women who open up about their experiences still have to endure all kinds of terrible responses, making what can be an incredibly sad, hard experience even worse.

Here are a few expert-backed ideas for how to talk to women who’ve experienced a pregnancy loss with kindness and grace.

Don’t start any sentence with “at least...”

“One of the things I find most disturbing — and that clients tell me they hear all the time — is ‘at least you know you can get pregnant,’” Zucker said. But being reminded you got pregnant is not necessarily a comfort when you’re not pregnant anymore, and Zucker really believes it’s something people say basically to assuage their own discomfort with a difficult topic.

Other frequent offenders in this category: “At least you weren’t too far along,”
“At least you have another kid at home” and “At least you’re young and can try again.”

“People will say things like ‘you’ll have more children,’” said Jamie Kreiter, a Chicago-based licensed clinical therapist who is certified in perinatal mental health. “All of those things are intended as words of support and encouragement, but women are mourning this baby.”

Don’t assume you know how she’s feeling

This one is almost painfully simple, but experts say it trips up well-meaning friends and family time and again. People react to miscarriages in very different ways. Some women feel a profound sense of loss. Some women experience serious grief and depressive symptoms. Some women grapple with those feelings for a long time. Some don’t. Some women might not feel hit particularly hard by the miscarriage. Some might feel ambivalent about it. Some might feel relieved.

Don’t assume you know what a woman is going through after a miscarriage, and don’t say things like, “You must be so XYZ.”

“Oftentimes we’re projecting,” Zucker said. Instead, simply give women space to feel whatever it is they’re feeling, she urged, and let them know you are holding that space for them for as long as they need.

Don’t immediately jump to share your story

It is wonderful and important that more and more women are sharing their stories of miscarriage, but it shouldn’t be your first response when a woman you know is going through it. Sometimes sharing a personal experience can provide comfort and a sense of connection; other times it can be alienating.

“I think, unintentionally, you can start to have this one-upping or comparing thing, like, ‘Oh, I had that too and I felt like this,’” Zucker said.

Just be deliberate about how you share your experience, she advised, and be sensitive to the reaction. If it’s clear sharing your own story isn’t helping, stop.

Do offer to help spread the word

After a miscarriage, people often want concrete things they can do to help. For women who told friends and family about their pregnancy, or who were physically showing, one possibility is to offer to tell others for them. Basically, you can offer to help be the messenger so she doesn’t have to be, Kreiter said.

And that can extend not just to friends, family or co-workers you have in common, but also people in her day-to-day life who she might not even have explicitly discussed her pregnancy with, but who (again, depending on how far along she was) might have noticed, Kreiter said, like the mail carrier. Making the offer to help have those conversations can take a bit of weight off her shoulders.

Do be flexible around family gatherings and events

“Things like family holidays and anniversaries can bring back grief symptoms, even if the woman has otherwise been managing fine,” said Kreiter. In her practice, she might encourage a client who had been dreaming of her first Christmas with her baby, for example, to ditch the big family get-together in favor of a quick getaway with her partner. Friends and family can help in that regard by being mindful of potentially tough dates or events around the calendar and by making it clear that you’re supportive of her doing whatever she needs to do to put her mental health first.

Likewise, events like baby showers can be really difficult for some women who’ve experienced pregnancy loss. Kreiter said to invite them, but make sure they know you understand if they can’t attend.

“I tell clients that the people in their lives who love them will understand,” she said.

If nothing else, keep it simple

“It’s still puzzling to me why people aren’t saying something as simple as: ‘I am so sorry for your loss. I’m here for you,’” Zucker said. She thinks well-intentioned friends and relatives often feel pressure to come up with something they think is somehow more profound. But a statement like that is loving, straightforward and empathic, which is what women need.

“I am so sorry for your loss,” echoed Kreiter. Simple, loving and direct.

Facebook Took Down Fake Political Pages, And India’s Right-Wing Twitter Had A Meltdown

In a blog post on Monday, Facebook said that it’s taking down a number of political pages for “coordinated inauthentic behaviour”. Cutting out the jargon, this meant that these entities were using multiple pages to spam users with the same memes and posts, all the while acting as if the pages were separate from each other.

This included over 100 pages running propaganda material from Pakistan, including pages posting about Kashmir

Facebook also said it removed two unrelated sets of pages from its platform as well as Instagram, which it owns: the first was linked to people associated with the Congress’s IT Cell, and the second was connected to people associated with an Indian IT firm called Silver Touch. Silver Touch is the company that’s allegedly behind the Narendra Modi app, according to NDTV, although this was denied by BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya.

According to Facebook’s statement, around 687 Congress-related pages were taken down, compared with just about 15 related to the BJP. So it was surprising that the most visibly angry reactions to the news came from right-wingers on Twitter, many with Chowkidaar affixed to their names. As Alt News founder Pratik Sinha pointed out in a Twitter thread, people started threatening to consult lawyers about whether there were grounds to pursue treason charges against Facebook.

So why exactly are pro-BJP voices on social media so upset with Facebook?

This is where it gets even more interesting. Facebook says in its statement that 321 pages were removed for civic spam not related to any organisation. The Print has reported, citing sources, that around 200 of these were pro-BJP pages.

If that’s the case, Facebook has taken fairly strong action against the BJP as well, but the social network hasn’t underlined this fact.

Also, the right-wing reaction may also fall into a larger pattern of crying victimization by tech platforms while seeking special treatment from them. While HuffPost India has written to Facebook to ask for more details, a quick parsing of pages that are offline shows that even the reach of those 15 removed pages was far greater than the opposition’s reach on Facebook. Here’s everything you need to know about the latest controversy:

1. On April 1, Facebook announced that it removed over 800 pages for inauthentic behaviour.

This removal was not because of the content of the pages, a source clarified, but rather because of the lack of disclosures and posting without revealing their political affiliations.

2. Facebook highlighted the fact that it has removed 687 pages or individuals linked to the Congress IT cell.

“While the people behind this activity attempted to conceal their identities, our review found that it was connected to individuals associated with an INC (Indian National Congress) IT Cell,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy at Facebook, said in a statement.

3. It also removed 15 pages linked to an IT company called Silver Touch.

Facebook first told Reuters that the firm was linked to a mobile app promoted by the BJP. It later told Reuters it had “seen no evidence to date of Silver Touch being associated with the NaMo App on our platform,” and “We won’t be speculating about off-platform connections of the actors we took down today.”

4. According to NDTV, Silver Touch is responsible for the Narendra Modi app.

NDTV’sreport also said that these social media efforts are possibly being financed using government funds.

5. BJP IT cell boss Amit Malviya has denied any connection to Silver Touch.

He told NDTV he had never heard of the company or its founder. Much like Facebook itself, the Narendra Modi app also has a fake news problem.

6. Facebook removed nearly 46 times as many Congress-supporting pages as BJP-supporting pages.

Malviya told ANI that it was unprecedented to see the Congress named by Facebook for running a network of fake pages. “All this so they could discredit the government, the Prime Minister, and make some political capital out of it.”

7. However, the impact of this deletion might still be felt more keenly by the BJP.

Although far fewer pages were shut down, these had a strongly established presence on Facebook, with some people estimating that the reach of these 15 pages was higher than the Congress’s 687 pages. Also, if The Print report is right, around 200 pro-BJP pages have also been taken down.

8. Unofficial sources say that pages with 200 million likes have been removed.

Speaking to Economic Times, a source said, “While we are suffering because of this action, Amit Malviya (BJP IT Cell head) is celebrating the removal of Congress pages on Twitter. This affects us by 90% more than it ever will impact the Congress.”

9. Right-wing Twitter is abuzz with outrage and complaining about the pages being shutdown.

You can easily find several threads of outrage on Twitter. There are also several hugely cheerful posts about Congress pages being shut down. Congress supporters are being less visible at present, not surprising considering that nearly 700 pages being shut down shows how both national parties are trying to misuse social media.

10. There’s a pattern of crying out about ‘unfair’ treatment by Twitter and Facebook.

There’s not much justification for it, but right-wing voices on social media have been quick to raise their voice about alleged victimisation by social media companies, and even hold protests in person.

Maisie Williams stunned “The Tonight Show” audience into silence on Monday when she pretended to drop a sensational spoiler about “Game of Thrones.”

Williams, who plays Arya Stark in HBO’s hit fantasy drama, casually dropped what she claimed was a devastating detail about her character’s fate in the show’s eighth and final season during her interview with host Jimmy Fallon.

Her fake reaction to realizing she’d dropped the bombshell was award-worthy:

Of course, it was an April Fools’ prank ― which Williams and Fallon took great delight in revealing after she’d stormed off the set.

Or was it?

The final season of “Game of Thrones” begins April 14.

The Congress released its manifesto for the 2019 election on Tuesday, providing some more details about its NYAY minimum income programme as well as revealing quite a few new ideas it has promised to implement if voted to power.

Some of the key proposals include withdrawal of the controversial Transgender Persons Bill, replacing the NITI Aayog with a leaner Planning Commission, introduction of a new law against hate crimes like lynching, scrapping of sedition law, amendment of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, discontinuing criminal defamation, introduction of a separate budget for farmers and review and replacement of the Goods and Services Tax with a revised law.

Here are ten key highlights from the manifesto:

1. Agriculture

  • Waiving loans in states where a waiver has not already been implemented.
  • Seeking to give freedom from indebtedness to farmers with a combination of remunerative prices, lower input costs and assured access to institutional credit.
  • Separate budget for farmers to give priority to issues affecting the agriculture sector.
  • Establishment of a permanent national commission on agriculture development and planning consisting of farmers, agriculture scientists and agriculture economists whose recommendations shall be binding on the government.

2. NYAY (Nyuntam Aay Yojana) or Minimum Income Support Programme

  • The programme will be rolled out in phases, so all poor families will be sought to be covered in the second year of implementation. In the first year, it will cost 1% of India’s GDP and in the second year, it will cost 2% of India’s GDP.
  • Independent panel of eminent economists, social scientists and statisticians to oversee the design, rollout and implementation of the programme.
  • The programme will be jointly implemented by central and state governments.
  • 5 crore families will be guaranteed a cash transfer of Rs 72,000.
  • Primarily, the woman of the household will get the cash transfer in her bank account.

3. Jobs

  • Creation of a new Ministry of Industry, Services and Employment in order to underline the link between the growth of industry and services sectors and rapid creation of jobs.
  • Four lakh vacancies in the central government, as on 1 April 2019, will be filled in the Central government, central public sector enterprises, judiciary and Parliament before the end of March 2020.
  • Creation of new Seva Mitra positions, estimated to be 10 lakh, in every Gram Panchayat and every Urban Local Body to ensure effective delivery of government services to citizens.

4. LGBTQIA+ rights

  • The party has promised to “immediately withdraw” the Transgender Persons Bill, 2018, pending in Parliament. After withdrawal of this bill, a new bill consistent with the judgement in the NALSA case will be introduced after consulting the LGBTQIA+ community.
  • Directions to provide gender sensitivity training, especially for protecting the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, will be given in government departments and organisations including the Armed Forces and police forces.

5. Minority rights

  • The party has promised to introduce a new law in the first session of the next Lok Sabha and in the Rajya Sabha for the prevention of hate crimes such as mob-engineered stripping, burning and lynching. It will provide for compensation to victims of such crimes and hold police and local administrations accountable for proven negligence.
  • The character of Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia as minority educational institutions will be upheld.
  • The National Commission for Women and National Commission for Minorities will be given constitutional status.

6. Economy and business

  • The Congress will review and replace the current GST law with another one billed as GST 2.0 which will have a “single, moderate, standard” rate of tax for all goods.
  • Essential goods of mass consumption like foodgrains, life saving drugs etc will be exempted from the GST.
  • The party has also proposed to announce a ‘make for the world’ policy under which foreign and Indian companies can invest in ‘Exclusive Export-only Zones’ to “manufacture and export” their entire production, pay no direct taxes and a low rate of corporate tax.

7. Legal reforms

  • The Congress has promised to scrap the sedition law as it feels that the law has been “misused” and has become “redundant because of subsequent laws”.
  • The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 will be amended in such a way as to “strike a balance between the powers of security forces and the human rights of citizens” and, more critically, “to remove immunity for enforced disappearance, sexual violence and torture”.

8. Digital rights of citizens

  • The party has promised to protect the personal data of all by passing a law. This way, the right to privacy will also be upheld.
  • Use of open standards and free and open source software to ensure availability of government services and information for citizens will be encouraged.
  • Law to provide safeguards against unlawful or excessive surveillance will be passed. It will provide for independent and parliamentary oversight.

9. North Eastern States

  • Congress has promised to restore the Special Category status to the North Eastern States.
  • The Citizenship Amendment Bill will be withdrawn.
  • The party said it will ensure no citizen of India is denied inclusion in the final National Register of Citizens (NRC).

10. Women Empowerment

  • Congress has promised to pass the Constitution (Amendment) Bill to provide for reservation of 33 percent of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies in the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha and in the Rajya Sabha.
  • The party has also said that it will repeal any provision of law that prohibits night shifts for women.
  • Congress has also promised to expand ICDS and provide a crèche in every Anganwadi based on need and demand.

Reducing Air Pollution Globally Could Prevent 3 Million Deaths Every Year, Says Study

BERLIN—Reducing global air pollution may prevent over three million premature deaths annually worldwide, particularly in India, Africa and China, according to a study.

The most significant contribution would be the rapid phasing out of fossil fuels, which is currently being discussed mainly to abate climate change, said researchers led by the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany.

The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), used a global atmospheric chemistry and climate model, linked to the latest estimates of health effects in order to study the combined impact of decarbonisation on public health, precipitation and the climate.

“If all sources of air pollution from human activities could be eliminated, that number would further rise to more than five million per year”

The researchers calculated that fossil fuel generated emissions are responsible for about 65% of premature deaths from human-made air pollutants worldwide.

Polluted air significantly elevates the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

It was recently found that the health burden of fine particulate matter is exceedingly high, said Professor Richard Burnett of Health Canada, who is the co-author of the study.

Phasing out the use of fossil fuels would therefore prevent more than three million premature deaths annually worldwide, researchers said.

“If all sources of air pollution from human activities could be eliminated, that number would further rise to more than five million per year,” added Professor Andy Haines from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who is also a co-author of the study.

Reduced air pollution would not only have a positive effect on human health but would also influence the climate.

Although a global phase-out of fossil fuels would decisively slow down the increase in atmospheric CO2, the current level of around 400 parts per million (ppm) in the atmosphere would not diminish anytime soon.

On the other hand, air pollution from particulate matter in the atmosphere, which reflects some of the solar radiation and cools the Earth to a certain extent, would rapidly decline.

Less particulate matter in the atmosphere and the consequent increase in sea surface temperature, will increase evaporation from the oceans.

For this reason, a global phase-out of fossil fuels would even lead to a short-term global temperature increase of about 0.5 degrees Celsius.

It is still possible to limit warming to two degrees, researchers said.

“The rise in temperature resulting from the removal of pollution particles from the air can be tempered by a simultaneous reduction of the greenhouse gases methane, ozone and hydrofluorocarbons in the troposphere,” said Professor Veerabhadran Ramanathan of the University of California in San Diego, US, who co-authored the study.

Methane, ozone and hydrofluorocarbons are much shorter-lived than carbon dioxide, but they have a particularly strong near-term impact on the climate.

Their reduction would therefore have a direct cooling effect, whereas the climate impact of the longer-lived CO2 will last for centuries.

Less particulate matter in the atmosphere and the consequent increase in sea surface temperature, will increase evaporation from the oceans.

This would result in more rainfall in several regions plagued by drought, researchers said.

The effect is particularly pronounced in monsoon regions and could help improve food security and access to water for people in parts of Africa, notably the Sahel, Central America, northern China and India, they said.

The main implication of the study is that fossil fuel phase-out is a major opportunity not only to slow down climate change, but also to significantly improve the health of people from around the world.

Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande On Singapore Parliament's 'Offensive' Playlist

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - American pop stars Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande were on an “offensive lyrics” list presented to members of parliament in socially-conservative Singapore as part of a statement by the city-state’s home minister on hate speech.

Monday’s statement came nearly a month after Swedish death metal group Watain’s concert was banned in Singapore on concerns about the band’s history of “denigrating religions and promoting violence”.

Singapore keeps a tight rein on public speech and the media, especially when it comes to race and religion matters.

A photo of the ministerial statement on “restricting hate speech” was posted on Facebook by opposition MP Chen Show Mao late on Monday with the caption “lesson of the day”. The post had been shared over 1,000 times and received hundreds of comments by Tuesday afternoon.

The list cited Lady’s Gaga’s ‘Judas’ and Ariana Grande’s ‘God is a woman’, alongside songs ‘Heresy’ by Nine Inch Nails and ‘Take me to the Church’ by Hozier, as “illustrations of offensive lyrics”.

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande have both held concerts in Singapore previously and the list did not suggest any of these artists would be banned from performing again.

Singapore’s home ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The statement came on a day Singapore submitted wide-ranging fake news legislation in parliament, stoking fears from internet firms and human rights groups that it may give the government too much power and hinder freedom of speech.
