Nimrat Kaur is slowly establishing quite a unique career trajectory for herself.

After shooting to fame with Ritesh Batra's indie darling The Lunchbox, Kaur appeared in Akshay Kumar's Baby, an espionage thriller, while also doing two American gigs in the hit series Homeland and M Night Shyamalan's eerie but addictive Wayward Pines.

Now, the actress has signed Ekta Kapoor's first web series which will be streamed on Balaji's digital platform, expected to launch early next year.

Interestingly, there is some synergy between Kaur's past work and the next series, where she plays the first woman to be inducted into the Indian Army. While the plot sounds like one inspired from a real story, it is a completely fictitious story.

The show will be directed by Nagesh Kukunoor, who has made films like Iqbal, Dor, and more recently, Dhanak.

Talking to Bombay Times, Kaur said, "After Homeland (US TV series), I was keen to do a show that pushes me as an actor. The story is set against the backdrop of the Indian Army and since I come from a defence background, I got hooked instantly. What's exciting about partnering with Ekta is the common belief that we need to shake up digital entertainment with power-packed, strong and brave original content."

On the other hand, Kapoor, whose company's film production unit is on the backfoot after some box-office setbacks, told the paper, "When we announced the launch of our digital app, we promised to break stereotypes in storytelling. This series is a strong reinforcement of that commitment. While Nimrat is known for her unconventional choice of roles, Nagesh is known for his alternative style of filmmaking."
