1 In Every 20 People Suffer From Depression In India

One in every 20 people in India suffer from depression, according a recent survey conducted by the National Institute of Mental Heath and Neuro Sciences in 12 states.

The survey said that common mental disorders, including depression, anxiety and substance use, affect nearly 10 percent of the population, and are a huge burden on society, The Hindu reported today. These disorders are linked to non-communicable disorders such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Depression is higher among women in the 40 to 49 age group and among those residing in metros, according to the survey, the newspaper reported.

An estimated 3.5 percent of the elderly population is also affected by depression, the report said.
