The number of people injured in pellet attacks by the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir reached 1,000 on Thursday.

According to a report in The Indian Express, 35-year-old Mohammed Ehsan was the 1,000th person to sustain pellet injuries to the eye and get admitted to the Ophthalmology unit of Srinagar's Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital.

The protests in the Valley, which started after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on 8 July, have been taking violent turns in the form of clashes between the activists and security forces.

As of now, the clashes have claimed the lives of 84 people.

In September, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court had rejected a plea seeking a ban on the use of pellet guns in controlling street protests in Kashmir Valley, citing the situation on the ground. The Court observed that as long as there was violence by unruly mobs, use of force was inevitable.
