The 18th Mumbai Film Festival, which is slated to take place from October 20th to October 27th just added a renowned filmmaker to the list of celebrity attendees — one that could get fans of a recent crime-drama really excited.

HuffPost India has learnt from reliable sources that Cary Joji Fukunaga, best known for directing the critically acclaimed American TV show True Detective, will be present in Mumbai to attend the festival.

While the organisers are keeping the development strictly under wraps, we have learnt that top brass from MAMI spoke with the acclaimed American director, who has confirmed his presence at the Mumbai film festival.

A source said that the director had always wanted to visit India and will also be hosting a Master Class at MAMI.

Fukunaga is likely to be one of the biggest names from international cinema to be present at MAMI, along with A Touch of Sin helmer Jia Zhangke, who will be presented with the Excellence in Cinema award.

Fukunaga won a Primetime Emmy for Direction for the first season of the HBO drama True Detective.

He also wrote, directed, and shot the critically acclaimed Netflix war-drama Beasts of No Nation that earned several nominations at major award ceremonies. Idris Elba, the film's lead, scored a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.

HuffPost reached out to MAMI's publicists for a confirmation on the story but they chose not to comment.
