The stars of Reliance's AGM were surely Jio 4G services and data tariff announcements today. But apart from that the company made a very important reveal in the sector of broadband Internet.
Reliance Jio will start their Fiber optics network based broadband in the selected cities. What's new in that, you ask? The Fiber to the home network will offer network speeds of as high as 1 Gbps. This will be a huge step in the space of home Internet.
"This is on par with any of the top wireline offerings across the world. We plan to expand this to top 100 cities in the country very soon," said Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of the Reliance group.
"At the same time, Jio will be expanding its offerings to the enterprise locations. We intend to provide multi-gigabit per second wireline data connections which are on par with the services available in the developed countries," he added.

Reliance Jio also plans to install WiFi hotspots across the country for easy internet access. The company is planning to install 1 million hotspots by the middle of the next year. Jio subscribers can use this data as broadband data even from their phones with added WiFi data in their plans.
On the other hand, Google has been providing free Wifi data on Indian railway stations in partnership with the government. Recently, 8 new Mumbai suburban stations got the Wifi hotspots powered by Google. Social network giant Facebook is also rumored to offer free Wifi at railway stations very soon.
For a developing country, India's average broadband speed is alarmingly low. The country is ranked 115th in the world in terms of network speed. The average broadband speed is 3.5 Mbps. In this situation a big player like Reliance can change the game in the Indian Internet sector.
